How to make Nautilus as Default Desktop Manager in XFCE
In Settings Manager > Session and Startup:
1. Make sure that you have no windows open or programs running (i.e. fresh login)
2. On the "Session" tab next to the xfdesktop entry, click on "immediately" and change it to "never"
3. Click on "Save Session"
4. In the "Application Autostart" tab, add a new entry to run nautilus to manage the desktop.
5. Log out and back in again to test.
** for autostarting Nautilus, in order to prevent it from opening a window on start I used the following parameters for the nautilus command in "Application Autostart":
nautilus --no-default-window
