"YUNIT" fork of Unity 8 delivering packages for Debian unstable

Is a fork of Canonical's Unity 8 repository as of April 5, 2017. Following Mark Shuttleworth's announcement to abandon Unity 8 development.

YUNIT (formerly unity8.org), fork of Unity 8 developed by John Salatas, delivering packages for Debian unstable . "After two months of development, we are proud to announce that it is now available as a repository YUNIT overlay for Debian unstable (64bit)," said the developer.


This YUNIT Desktop can be fitted with an additional repository http://archive.yunit.io and for now only be successful if the user installed the Debian unstable branch using a desktop environment GNOME first.

For its initial release, YUNIT not as perfect as you can imagine. There are still some problems or crashes including the absence of provisions for online accounts , containers Libertine who has not run since he relies on LXD are not packaged in Debian, etc.


How to install YUNIT in Debian unstable

The following command can be run to install YUNIT.

# wget -qO - http://archive.yunit.io/yunit.gpg.key | apt-key add -
# echo 'deb http://archive.yunit.io/debian/ unstable main' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yunit.list
# Apt updates
# Apt upgrade
# apt install unity8-desktop-session unity8-greeter

Before installing, make sure your own Debian unstable GNOME desktop. If you used to use a desktop other than GNOME, this YUNIT installation may not succeed given the developers have not tested directly.


YUNIT for Ubuntu

After a successful developers build YUNIT for Debian, developers will soon backport it to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will also indirectly help UBPorts update the system from 15.04 to 16.04.
